This Cheddar & Bacon Dip is a homemade version of the very popular M&S Dip. The classic flavour combination of cheese and bacon together in a creamy and addictive dip. The perfect addition to any summer spread.
A homemade version of the M&S Cheddar & Bacon dip
Marks & Spencer recently launched their new range of dips for summer and they have caused quite the stir; and for good reason!
Their Cheddar & Bacon dip was the perfect combination of creaminess with the saltiness from the bacon and cheddar.
It is simple to make and sure to be an absolute hit at any barbeque, party or buffet.
Why make this Cheddar & Bacon dip yourself?
You might be wondering why you’d need to make this dip yourself if M&S sell a very tasty version already.
Although this isn’t one of M&S’ handcrafted range, it is still on the higher price for a dip. Making it yourself is definitely more cost effective, especially if you are catering for a crowd. Trust me, it won’t last long!
Also by making it yourself you can use fresh ingredients without the need for any preservatives which are in supermarket dips.
Which Cheese & bacon is best to use?
Although I have used streaky bacon in this dip, you can really use whichever bacon you like. Both back bacon and streaky bacon will work well. I would just make sure any fat that isn’t crisped up is removed before adding to the dip.
For the cheddar you don’t have to use anything particularly fancy or artisan. Just use whichever cheddar cheese you usually buy.
I am a big fan of extra mature cheddar and therefore this is what I use when I make this dip. I love the saltiness it adds along with the bacon and therefore haven’t added additional salt in the recipe.
However if you use a milder cheese and your bacon isn’t very salty, you may wish to add a pinch of salt.
Can reduced fat products be used?
For this dip I have used full fat cream cheese, mayonnaise and soured cream to make it as creamy and decadent as the M&S version.
You can definitely use reduced fat alternatives for the dairy in this recipe. You may notice that the dip has a looser consistency if you use lighter alternatives as they tend to not be as thick as the full fat versions.
In recipes like this dip, it shouldn’t matter that it might be a little looser.
With regards to the taste, using reduced fat options will affect the taste slightly as it won’t be quite as rich. Personally I tend to buy reduced fat options so I use these to make this dip as they are the ingredients I already have to hand.
scale up the recipe to feed a crowd
One huge advantage of making this dip yourself rather than buying the M&S version is that it is very easy to scale up the recipe.
One tub of cream cheese will make quite a few portions of this dip. This makes it economical and easy if you want to scale up the recipe and make more.
It is an incredibly moreish dip that I really would recommend increasing the quantities so you don’t run out if there are more than a couple of you eating it.
how long will this cheddar & Bacon dip keep for?
If you cover the dip and store it in the fridge, it will keep for 2-3 days. If you have left this dip out for a while as part of a buffet for example, I would probably cut your losses and bin it. This is because it contains dairy which needs to be kept in the fridge.
It can be left out of the fridge for a little while, but 30 mins to 1 hour would be my maximum time.
how to serve this cheddar & Bacon dip
Like the M&S version, this is a dip so you can serve it as you would any other dip. Vegetables like carrots, peppers and cucumber would be great to serve with it. You can use any vegetables you like of course.
When it comes to tortillas and crisps, I would make sure they are flavours that compliment the cheese and bacon in the dip. Lightly salted tortillas or crisps are my preference to serve with it because they don’t distract from the flavours in the dip.
I also like to serve this dip with some lovely fresh, crusty bread. You can either use the bread to scoop up some of the dip or spready it over the bread.
It is also the perfect thing to dip air fried potatoes into. What is better than a hot and crisp potato dipped into a decadent cheese and bacon dip?!
