Easy Cinnamon Stewed Apples are so simple to make and utterly delicious. These soft apples are cooked with cinnamon to giving them the perfect spiced flavour. They are a fantastic addition to so many different dishes to add a touch of sweetness and cosiness.

which apples are best to use?
When deciding which apples to use, it is first good to think about the final texture you want for your stewed apples. This is because different varieties of apple will cook more quickly and either cook down a lot more and others might remain in chunks more.
I like to use a variety of cooking apples (Bramley apples) and eating apples to not only provide a varied texture but also balance the sweetness of the eating apples and tartness of the Bramley apples.

When it comes to which eating apples to use, I don’t think you need to be too particular. Whichever apples you would usually buy to eat will be fine. However I don’t personally see any benefit from using more expensive apples such as Pink Lady.
If you want to use just Bramley apples, or your apples are quite tart; you may want to slightly increase the sugar. I would recommend cooking them for 10 minutes before carefully trying some to see if you need to add more sugar and cook for a minute or two longer.

do you have to peel your apples?
If you ask Jamie Oliver, you don’t need to core your apples let alone peel them! Personally I like to peel and core my apples when making these stewed apples.
You don’t need to peel your apples because as we all know apple peel is perfectly fine to eat. However the reason I peel the apples is because I don’t like the texture they provide in the finished recipe.

how long to cook your apples for
This varies depending on the size you have cut your apples and how soft you would like your apples to be.
If you cut your apples into quite large pieces then they will take longer to become soft and cooked through. Likewise if you cut them really small they will cook more quickly.
Everyone will have a personal preference on how cooked down and soft they’d like their stewed apples to be. Some people will like them to be maintain most of their shape and texture whereas other people prefer them almost like apple puree.
However you like your stewed apples, the cooking time will vary. But its very easy to check on the apples and see how they’re doing as you go.

tweak to your own preferences
This recipe is almost a guide as there are a few aspects you might want to tweak.
The amount of sugar you add will depend on how sweet your apples are. If you have used predominantly cooking apples then you might want to add more sugar than if you have used mostly sweeter apples.
You may want to adjust the spices as well. I have used cinnamon and a pinch of mixed spice to give these stewed apples a warming flavour. However if you like a big punch of cinnamon you might want to add more.

how long will this stewed apple keep for?
I would keep the apples in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days. If you want to keep them any longer than this I would recommend freezing them.
The recipe is very easily reduced or increased if you would like to make more or less stewed apples.

How to reheat stewed apples
You can absolutely eat these stewed apples cold and that is my preference when eating them with granola and yogurt.
But if you want to eat them warm, I would recommend reheating them for a minute or until they are piping hot in the microwave. You can reheat them in a pan on the stove too but you might need to add a drop of water so they don’t become too dry.
I would only reheat the amount you are wanting to eat each time. For example don’t reheat the whole batch if you only want one portion.

how to freeze cinnamon stewed apple
Wait until the apples have cooled down slightly before transferring them into a container or bag. I like to freeze individual portions of the apples so I can grab them as and when I need them. Keep them in the freezer for up to three months.
When you want to eat them, allow them to defrost in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. If you want to eat them hot, you can do this from frozen.

how to serve easy cinnamon stewed apple
I love to serve these stewed apples with granola and yogurt to make a delicious and filling breakfast or snack. You can make granola pots up in advance and take them with you for an on-the-go meal.
They are also delicious served on top of a tasty stack of American pancakes to make the perfect weekend brunch. Or serve them with ice cream for a simple but satisfying dessert.
These cinnamon stewed apples make a fantastic base for an apple crumble. Just use the crumble topping from my blueberry crumble recipe and you will have a cosy and comforting pudding in no time.
