Homemade Chick Fil A Sauce

Jump to Recipe

Make your own version of this addictive and delicious sauce. Once you have tried this Homemade Chick Fil A sauce you’ll never have to buy it again. This sauce is an absolute must with chicken nuggets and chips.

What is Chick Fil A Sauce

Chick Fil A is a popular fast food chain in the US that specialises in chicken. They offer quite a few delicious sauces, but their namesake sauce is the most popular.

This iconic sauce is the perfect mix of creamy and smoky with a sweetness and slight bite. It really is worth the hype and so simple to make your own copycat version at home.

Why make your own chick fil a sauce

You can now buy Chick Fil A sauce here in the UK but it is so expensive! A bottle will easily set you back £5 which I think is crazy even though I love the stuff.

It is so simple to make yourself at home and will cost you a fraction of the price. It will also have less additives if you make it yourself which is a great advantage.

What is in homemade chick fil a sauce?

With only a few ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, you can create the most delicious sauce.

Mayonnaise

I use light mayonnaise when I make this Chick Fil A sauce just because that is what I usually buy and therefore what is in my fridge. If you use full fat mayonnaise your sauce is likely to be richer and even creamier.

Likewise you can you extra light mayonnaise if this is what you usually buy. It might not be quite as creamy, but it will still be very tasty.

bbq sauce

BBQ sauces can vary quite a lot in flavour so this is a little trickier because it can affect the finished sauce. The BBQ sauce is to add smokiness but without being the prominent flavour.

I used the Lidl own brand bbq sauce because it was what I had in the cupboard. It isn’t a particularly smoky sauce and doesn’t have any other strong flavours so worked well in the Chick Fil A sauce.

Use whatever your favourite BBQ sauce is. If it has quite a strong flavour, add half the amount in the recipe and taste it before deciding whether you want to add more.

Here in the UK I think the majority of our BBQ sauces will be tomato based rather than mustard based like you can get in the US so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Runny honey

The honey adds the delicious sweetness to this sauce. I say to use runny honey simply because it is easier to combine with the rest of the ingredients.

I wouldn’t use any fancy honey for this recipe, any standard runny honey you already have will be absolutely fine.

Dijon mustard

I use Dijon mustard because that is what I usually keep in the fridge and it gave the perfect level of bite I was looking for.

American mustard is probably more accurate and I do want to try it with that to compare. American mustard is slightly milder than Dijon so you might want to add half a teaspoon more if you decided to use it.

Make sure you don’t use English mustard for this recipe as it will be far too hot. I also wouldn’t recommend using wholegrain mustard because that would completely change the look of the finished sauce.

How to make vegan chick fil a sauce

This homemade Chick Fil A sauce should naturally be gluten free. You do just need to check the bbq sauce you are using is gluten free as some aren’t.

To make this sauce vegan you just need to use a vegan mayonnaise and then switch the honey to either agave or maple syrup.

make a bigger batch

I have deliberately kept the quantity in the recipe quite small encase people didn’t want to store the sauce.

It is incredibly easy to scale up the recipe if you are serving more people or if you want to keep some for later.

How long does Homemade Chick Fil A sauce keep for?

You can keep the sauce in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Although it is so simple to make, you can make it in advance and leave it in the fridge until you are ready to use it.

What to serve with homemade chick fil A sauce

Honestly this sauce is so good you’ll be finding any excuse to eat it!

The absolute classic combination is Chick Fil A sauce with chicken nuggets and waffle fries. But you can branch out and serve it with chicken wings and homemade chips as well.
