Frozen oven chips have been a timesaver at meal times for years. But if we’re using frozen chips, we should make them as good as they can be and that’s where Air Fryer Frozen Chips come in!
WHY USE AN AIR FRYER AND NOT AN OVEN?
Air fryers have been gaining momentum over the last few years but have sky rocketed in popularity in the last few months. People are looking for more cost effective ways of cooking and air fryers are a great option.
Air fryers cook food quicker than a standard convection oven which is great for saving energy and pennies but also for busy families that want to be able to cook food quickly.
Another advantage is that air fryers are smaller than ovens and grills so you’re not heating up a full-sized oven and instead a smaller air fryer. This means you’re using less energy because you’re heating up a smaller appliance as well as cooking the food faster.
Personally, I think frozen oven chips are better cooked in an air fryer rather than an oven.
which chips can you cook in an air fryer?
You can cook any oven chips you like in your air fryer. The frozen potato aisle really is your oyster.
Because I am dedicated to chips, I have tested the timings for steak cut chips, crinkle cut chips. waffle fries and french fries.
There are so many different chips/fries available these days, whether you opt for the big brand McCain or supermarket own. Your favourite variety might not be specifically named in the recipe, however you should be able to pick the closest match.
You could also make my homemade Air Fryer Chips if you have a bit more time on your hands.
Steak cut chips, chunky chips, homestyle fries, beef dripping chips
These are are all thick cut varieties of chips which will take a little longer in the air fryer due to their size. 13 – 15 minutes
Crinkle cut chips, straight cut chips and french fries
These are all thinner varieties of chips and therefore take less time to cook. 10-12 minutes.
Waffle fries, lattice fries and curly fries
These varieties all take 10-12 minutes and are the varieties that I think best benefit from air fryer cooking because they crisp up perfectly.
How many chips can you cook in an air fryer?
How many chips you can cook in your air fryer depends on the size of your air fryer. Obviously with a larger basket you can cook more chips.
It isn’t quite as simple as that though. If you are cooking a larger number of chips, they are likely to take a little longer to cook as the air isn’t able to circulate as well as if there were fewer in the basket.
This also means the chips will benefit from tossing a couple of times to ensure even cooking.
do you need to preheat an air fryer?
That depends on your air fryer, some require preheating whilst others don’t. I have a Ninja 7-in-1 multicooker and I have never preheated mine.
If your air fryer does require preheating, check the chips a few minutes sooner than the recipe states. If your air fryer is warm, food is likely to cook a few minutes faster.
can you use an air fryer liner?
Air fryer liners are a great time saving addition because they are usually easier to wash than the basket of your air fryer.
Most reusable air fryer liners are silicone and although they are handy to have, I wouldn’t recommend using them for all recipes.
Chips would take longer to crisp up if you use a liner but you could use one if you really wanted.
I’ve written a whole post on whether you should use an air fryer liner, check it out for more information.
How to serve air fryer frozen chips
I’m sure we all know how to serve chips, but I thought I would give some suggestions nonetheless.
In their simplest form, chips are made to be served with Air Fryer Fish Fingers and Sausages. Burgers and chips are a classic combination. My Bacon Cheese Burgers, Herby Turkey Burgers and Halloumi Burgers are all delicious options.
Air Fryer Frozen Chips are also a great alternative with leftover meat from a roast dinner. My Honey Glazed Ham would be perfect with some chips and a fried egg.
I recommend making some ranch dip to go with whichever type of chips you cook. It is especially delicious with waffle fries though!
You could also use them for my Air Fryer Pizza Fries which are simple and delicious.
