Herby Potato Seasoning

Jump to Recipe

Add instant flavour to your favourite potato dishes with this Herby Potato Seasoning. It’s incredibly simple to make and can be used to elevate so many meals.

Why use this herby potato seasoning?

This herby potato seasoning is a fantastic way to add delicious flavour to so many potato recipes. But why do you need a premixed seasoning you might ask.

Some people may not be confident in knowing which herbs would work well together. Getting the quantities of each ingredient right might also be a concern for some.

This recipe tells you exactly what flavours and quantities you will need for a really tasty, balanced seasoning.

Another advantage is you can make a batch and store it in the cupboard so it is really quick when you want to add flavour to your potatoes.

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN this herby POTATO SEASONING?

I have kept the ingredients as simple as possible for this seasoning whilst also ensuring maximum flavour. You will probably already have the four ingredients you need in your cupboard.

  • Mixed herbs – this is typically a premixed jar of thyme, marjoram, parsley, oregano, sage and basil. All supermarkets will sell this and it is really convenient for making this seasoning
  • Garlic granules – potatoes can only be improved with the addition of garlic. Garlic granules are my go-to choice but you can use flakes or powder if you prefer. Just adjust the recipe as needed
  • Sea salt – more often than not I use sea salt in cooking. If you prefer to use table salt you definitely can, but you will need to use less. I would recommend using half of the amount in the recipe below
  • Black pepper – I am not a big fan of pepper so I have kept the quantity of this relatively small, feel free to add more if you like a stronger pepper flavour

I have chosen to use mixed herbs instead of individual herbs to keep this seasoning as easy as possible. However you can use any herbs you’d like. If you wanted to use individual herbs I think two teaspoons each of thyme, parsley and oregano would be great.

Personally I’m not too keen on using dried rosemary to season potatoes. I find there’s a lot of the stalks in there and it can become quite hard when cooked in this way.

how to make potato seasoning

Making this herby potato seasoning really couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is measure out the herbs, garlic, salt and pepper and mix them together.

You can add them directly into the jar you are going to store the seasoning in. If you do this, you can shake them right there in the jar to mix them up.

Scale up the recipe

This recipe is incredibly easy to scale up. It is up to you how much seasoning you would like to make. You can also scale down the recipe to make enough for just one portion of potatoes too.

In the recipe card below, hover over the number of servings and you will get a slider bar. Here you can adjust the recipe to the number of servings you would like to make.

I like to make a small jar’s worth at a time to keep in the cupboard so it is super quick and easy to just grab while I am making dinner.

how much herby potato seasoning to use

One tablespoon of this herby potato seasoning will perfectly season around 500-600g of potatoes. If you would like the potatoes to be lightly seasoned, you can always reduce the amount you add to your potatoes.

This potato seasoning is meant to be used to season the potatoes before they are cooked. I would not recommend adding it to the potatoes once they’re cooked.

The herbs and garlic really benefit from being cooked and would be a little too harsh in flavour if you ate them as they are.

How long will this herby potato seasoning keep for?

If you store this herby potato seasoning in an air tight jar or container, it will keep for at least 6 months.

The herbs themselves usually have a shelf life of twelve months so you can keep the seasoning for longer. However herbs can begin to lose their flavour slightly as they get older so I would resist the urge of making a huge jar.

How to use herby potato seasoning

This seasoning is the perfect flavour enhancer to so many different potato recipes, but obviously my air fryer herby potatoes are a good place to start! This seasoning blend has a versatile flavour that would compliment so many meals, so get creative.

But as luck would have it, I have quite a few other suggestions for you!

  • Air Fryer Chips
  • Air Fryer Baby Potatoes
  • Air Fryer Potato Peel Crisps
  • Simple Air Fryer Roast Potatoes
  • Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes
  • Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes
  • Air Fryer New Potatoes

Just because this is called a potato seasoning, doesn’t mean you can only use it exclusively for potatoes. It is really delicious on chicken and vegetables too.

You can either mix it with butter and spread over a chicken or sprinkle it over a chicken drizzled with oil for a deliciously flavoursome roast chicken.

You can also use it in any dishes these flavours would work well in. It would be really tasty in my creamy chicken & potato bake or slow cooker chicken casserole.

Love the flavours in this simple seasoning, I used it on oven baked potato wedges and they were delicious. I’ll be trying it on hasselback potatoes too.

I love making your air fryer potato recipes. I tried the seasoning with air fryer potato slices and the seasoning was so easy to make and made such a difference to the flavour.

This is so much easier to have on hand than mixing it up every time, and much cheaper than buying a ready mixed version!

Definitely! I love having it in the cupboard ready mixed so it’s so quick and easy.
