Air Fryer Potato Slices

Jump to Recipe

Crisp on the outside and fluffy within, these Air Fryer Potato Slices are an easy and delicious way to serve potatoes. Keep them simple or add more flavours for the perfect side dish.

WHY USE AN AIR FRYER AND NOT AN OVEN?

Air fryers cook food quicker than a standard convection oven which is great for saving energy and pennies but also for busy families that want to be able to cook food quickly.

Another advantage is that air fryers are smaller than ovens and grills so you’re not heating up a full-sized oven and instead a smaller air fryer. This means you’re using less energy because you’re heating up a smaller appliance as well as cooking the food faster.

which potatoes are recommended for potato slices?

When it comes to choosing the right potato for slices, I tend to base it on which potatoes would be good to make chips with.

In the UK, the best options are Maris Piper and King Edward potatoes. It helps that these are also the most commonly found potatoes so you shouldn’t have any problems finding them.

If you look for any potato variety considered an ‘all rounder’ such as estima, melody or marfona then you can’t go wrong.

If you’re in the US, Yukon Gold potatoes will work really well.

You can also use new potatoes for smaller potato slices. I’d typically cut these thinner so they wouldn’t need as long to cook.

do you need to peel the potatoes?

It is completely up to you whether you peel your potatoes when making slices. The same as when I am making chips, I more often than not don’t peel my potatoes.

I like to leave the skin on because I like the flavour of the skin. But also it saves a lot of time not having to peel the potatoes! Peeling potatoes happens to be one of my least favourite tasks in the kitchen.

If you do peel your potatoes, make sure you keep the peelings to make my Air Fryer Potato Peel Crisps.

how to cut the potato slices

It is up to you how thick you cut your potatoes. The thinner you cut them, the quicker they will cook and likewise the thicker they are the longer they will take.

I like to cut the potatoes into approximately half centimetre slices. This allows them to get crisp on the outside but stay fluffy in the middle.

If you would prefer crispier potatoes, cut your slices a little thinner. Watch them carefully as they won’t take as long to cook as the recipe states and you don’t want them to burn.

add other flavours to your chips

I have purposely left these air fryer potato slices really simple in their flavourings; just oil and salt. This is because once you know the basic method, you can add as many different flavourings as you like.

You might want to try out these flavours to spice up your potato slices:

  • Herby potato seasoning
  • Garlic
  • Cajun seasoning
  • Peri peri seasoning
  • Chinese salt & pepper seasoning
  • Lightly spiced potato seasoning

How many potato slices can you cook in an air fryer?

How many potato slices you can cook in your air fryer depends on the size of your air fryer. Obviously with a larger basket you can cook more.

Out of all of my air fryer potato recipes, these potato slices are the ones that need the most room and also attention. Their large surface area means they take up a lot of room in the air fryer.

This also makes it slightly more difficult for them to cook evenly as they have the tendency to stick together. To combat this, I make sure I toss them more frequently than I would usually for other air fried potatoes.

If you have a smaller air fryer, I would be tempted to cook the potato slices in batches and then add them all back in at the end to heat through again.

But if you have a large air fryer basket like in my Ninja Foodi Flexdrawer, you will be able to spread the potato slices out more easily and ensure more even cooking.

do you need to preheat an air fryer?

That depends on your air fryer, some require preheating whilst others don’t. I have a Ninja 7-in-1 multicooker and a Ninja Foodi Flexdrawer and I have never preheated either of them.

If your air fryer does require preheating, check the potato slices a few minutes sooner than the recipe states. If your air fryer is warm, food is likely to cook a few minutes faster.

can you use an air fryer liner?

Air fryer liners are a great time saving addition because they are usually easier to wash than the basket of your air fryer.

Most reusable air fryer liners are silicone and although they are handy to have, I wouldn’t recommend using them for all recipes.

Potato slices would take longer to crisp up if you use a liner but you could use one if you really wanted.

I’ve written a whole post on whether you should use an air fryer liner, check it out for more information.

How to serve Air Fryer potato slices

These potato slices make the perfect accompaniment to so many different meals. Anytime you would usually serve chips, you serve these air fryer potato slices instead.

I also like to serve them with meals like my Slow Cooker Chicken Casserole, Slow Cooker Sausage Casserole and Slow Cooker Pork & Mustard Stew.

They would also work really well as an alternative to roast potatoes served with my Air Fryer Whole Roast Chicken or Honey Glazed Ham.

Ingredients

  • 500 g potatoes
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 tsp sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer if required

  2. Slice 500g potatoes into approximately 5mm thick slices and add to a bowl

  3. Drizzle over 1 tbsp sunflower oil and 1 tsp sea salt. Toss until fully coated

  4. Add the potato slices to your air fryer trying to keep them in one layer if possible. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might need to cook the potatoes in two batches

  5. Cook the potato slices at 190°C for 20-25 minutes gently turning them with a spatula a couple of times

Recipe Notes

The thickness of the potato slices will affect the cooking time. If you cut the potatoes thinner, reduce the cooking time.

If you have a smaller air fryer, I would recommend cooking the potato slices in batches.

The potato slices have a tendency to stick together. To prevent this gently turn the potato slices a couple of times whilst cooking.

If your air fryer requires preheating, check the potato slices a few minutes sooner than the recipe states.

Hi Stuart, yes absolutely. You might want to initially cook them for a few minutes less so when you reheat them they don’t get too crisp.

Hi Ellie, thank you for your comment. I didn’t claim this as a new idea, it’s just helping other people who haven’t been making them this way know how to cook them.

I just lifted my main crop potatoes from the garden yesterday, so tried this recipe and I’m so glad I did. So easy and it really brings out the flavour of the potatoes.
