Air Fryer Potato Wedges are simple and delicious with just the right amount of spice. Switch up your chips for these tasty potato wedges to add instant flavour to any meal.
WHY USE AN AIR FRYER AND NOT AN OVEN?
Air fryers cook food quicker than a standard convection oven which is great for saving energy and pennies but also for busy families that want to be able to cook food quickly.
Another advantage is that air fryers are smaller than ovens and grills so you’re not heating up a full-sized oven and instead a smaller air fryer. This means you’re using less energy because you’re heating up a smaller appliance as well as cooking the food faster.
Wedges and chips were the initial reason I bought an air fryer all those years ago. I think the air flow circulation helps them cook more evenly which produces a better potato wedge.
What is the difference between wedges and chips?
In my opinion potato wedges are different to chips because of how they are cut. Chips are cut into smaller rectangular shapes. Whereas wedges are meant to be thicker and chunkier and cut into triangular shapes around the potato.
Another smaller difference is that wedges typically always have the skin left on them. Whereas with chips it is personal preference whether you peel the skin.
Wedges are also more commonly seasoned than chips. If you were to buy frozen wedges here in the UK they would more often than not be sold as lightly spiced wedges.
which potatoes are recommended for air fryer potato wedges?
For a good wedge you are looking for the same texture as you would expect from a chip. You want a fluffy interior and a nice crisp exterior. To get that, you need to start with the right potato.
In the UK, the best options are Maris Piper and King Edward potatoes. It helps that these are also the most commonly found potatoes so you shouldn’t have any problems finding them.
If you look for any potato variety considered an ‘all rounder’ such as estima, melody or marfona then you can’t go wrong.
If you’re in the US, Yukon Gold potatoes will work really well.
is it worth soaking your potatoes in water?
Soaking wedges in water is a tip people use to draw out some of the excess starch from the potatoes to leave you with the crispest wedges.
I have been making wedges in my air fryer for years and have never soaked my potatoes before cooking. However I wanted to try this method just in case it changed my life.
Once when I was making chips, I decided to try the soaking method for myself. I left my chips to soak for nearly one hour before draining and thoroughly drying them. I didn’t notice any difference after cooking the chips.
Soaking the chips wasn’t worth the additional effort in my opinion so knew the results would be the same for wedges. If you want to soak your potatoes, by all means feel free.
How to cut the potatoes into wedges
Before cutting my potatoes I make sure to wash the skin and remove any eyes or dark spots on them. Make sure you dry them thoroughly.
I cut my potatoes in half lengthways and then place the cut side of the potato down onto my board. Depending on the size of the potato, I then cut each half into three or four wedges.
If you cut your potatoes into smaller wedges then they will take less time to cook. It is worth mentioning that you don’t want to cut them too small or else the ‘points’ of the wedges may burn before the thicker part of the potato is cooked.
add other flavours to your potato wedges
As I mentioned before, most wedges you can buy here in the UK or you would get in a restaurant are lightly spiced. That is why I wanted to make my version similar and add my Potato Seasoning.
That doesn’t mean that you have to use my potato seasoning. There are lots of other delicious flavours that would work really well with these potato wedges.
You could also try:
- Herby potato seasoning
- Cajun seasoning
- Fajita Seasoning
- Lemon pepper seasoning
- Peri peri seasoning
- Chinese salt & pepper seasoning
do you need to preheat an air fryer?
That depends on your air fryer, some require preheating whilst others don’t. I have a Ninja 7-in-1 multicooker and I have never preheated mine.
If your air fryer does require preheating, check the potato wedges a few minutes sooner than the recipe states. If your air fryer is warm, food is likely to cook a few minutes faster.
can you use an air fryer liner?
Air fryer liners are a great time saving addition because they are usually easier to wash than the basket of your air fryer.
Most reusable air fryer liners are silicone and although they are handy to have, I wouldn’t recommend using them for all recipes.
Potato wedges would take longer to crisp up if you use a liner but you could use one if you really wanted.
I’ve written a whole post on whether you should use an air fryer liner, check it out for more information.
How to serve Air Fryer Potato Wedges
One of my husband’s favourite meals is chicken and wedges. Now I do often use frozen chicken and wedges, but when I am feeling extra nice I make them from scratch for him. I serve these air fryer potato wedges with my air fryer chicken nuggets for an special treat. Plus I much prefer them homemade!
You can serve these wedges with any meal you would usually serve chips. I often serve these potato wedges with a pork loin chop, Parmesan Tenderstem Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts with Bacon & Garlic. This meal is permanently in our dinner rotation!
You can also never go wrong with burger and wedges! My Bacon Cheese Burgers, Herby Turkey Burgers and Halloumi Burgers are all delicious options.
However you decide to serve these tasty potato wedges, I highly recommend dipping them into some of my honey mustard mayo or ranch dip!
