Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Wings

Jump to Recipe

These Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan Wings are better than any restaurant or takeaway. Super crisp chicken wings tossed in mouth-watering garlic butter topped with Parmesan. Your family will be asking for these tasty wings on repeat!

Why cook chicken wings in the air fryer?

Chicken wings are something that need to be crispy in my opinion. Cooking them on the BBQ is a great way to get them deliciously crisp, but this isn’t an option to everyone year round.

Cooking chicken wings in the oven does result in tasty wings, but they tend to take a while and always seem to lack something. Deep frying wings will provide the crisp skin, but isn’t most people’s go-to cooking preference.

That’s where air fryer chicken wings come in! They’re quick to cook and have the most perfectly crisp skin which is everything you need from a wing.

Once you have air fried chicken wings I highly doubt you will cook them another way!

Homemade garlic parmesan wings are even better than wingstop!

Garlic parmesan chicken wings are hugely popular at Wingstop and other restaurants. But they are so simple to make yourself at home. And in my opinion they taste better too!

Don’t come for me, but personally I’m not keen on the flavour of the Wingstop garlic parm wings so I would always pick these homemade ones any day.

I don’t think that garlic parmesan wings travel very well which is another reason to not order a takeaway and make them yourself! That way you can also make then exactly how you like – go crazy with the garlic!

which garlic and parmesan to use

When it comes to garlic and parmesan, I opt for convenience in one instance and not for the other. But you do what works best for you.

Garlic

I absolutely hate peeling garlic so jars of minced or diced garlic really are my best friend. They have a milder taste than fresh cloves of garlic so if bear that in mind when you are deciding which type of garlic to use.

You could use garlic granules if that is all you have, but you might want to add a little more as they are milder in flavour.

Parmesan

I always buy fresh blocks of parmesan and grate it myself. Ready grated parmesan you can buy in the shops as preservatives added to it which I would just prefer to avoid. I think it also has a better flavour.

But use whichever parmesan you like – and use as much as you like!

Butter

I use salted butter for these wings, but the amount of salt in butter can vary as does people’s preferences. You may want to use less or more sea salt than I have stated in the recipe below.

If you use unsalted butter you will need to add more salt. No one wants an under salted chicken wing!

how long do chicken wings take to air fry?

Chicken wings can vary in size which also means the cooking time can vary. Unless your chicken wings are huge, they will be cooked in 10 – 11 minutes.

The additional cooking time is to get the wings to your chosen level of crispness.

It is also important to note that if you load up your air fryer basket with a lot of chicken wings, they will take longer to cook because the air won’t be able to circulate as well.

I prefer to cook batches of fewer chicken wings at a time so they crisp up nicely. Once they are all cooked, I will then add them all to the basket for them to reheat through for a few minutes.

do you need to preheat an air fryer?

That depends on your air fryer, some require preheating whilst others don’t. I have a Ninja Foodi 7-in-1 multicooker and a Ninja Foodi Flexdrawer and I have never preheated either.

If your air fryer does require preheating, check the chicken wings a few minutes sooner than the recipe states. If your air fryer is warm, food is likely to cook a few minutes faster.

Also if you are cooking wings in batches, the wings will cook quicker when the air fryer is already warm. So check any additional batches a few minutes earlier as they are likely to cook slightly quicker.

can you use an air fryer liner?

Air fryer liners are a great time saving addition because they are usually easier to wash than the basket of your air fryer.

Most reusable air fryer liners are silicone and although they are handy to have, I wouldn’t recommend using them for all recipes.

I wouldn’t recommend using an air fryer liner when cooking chicken wings. You want them to be as crisp as possible and a liner would just get in the way of this.

They would take longer to get to the level of crispness wanted and you could risk the chicken becoming a little dry. But if you want to use one, don’t let me stop you.

I’ve written a whole post on whether you should use an air fryer liner, check it out for more information.

HOw to serve Air Fryer Garlic Parmesan WIngs

If you want to go all out, serve the wings with my garlic parmesan fries and easy ranch for dipping.

To create a Wingstop experience at home, make a wing selection with my lemon pepper and Cajun wings too. If you want to keep the fries more simple, serve my homemade chips. But make sure you don’t forget the Cajun corn!

These wings would also be delicious served with coleslaw and new potato salad. Add some halloumi fries for another tasty side dish.

Most wings are tasty served hot or cold, but personally I do prefer these served hot. When they cool the garlic butter solidifies slightly which doesn’t make them as pleasant to eat. You can of course reheat them if this happens.

How to reheat garlic parmesan wings

I would recommend only tossing as many wings as you think are likely to be eaten in the butter. This is because they will always taste their best when freshly tossed in the butter mixture. However I realise this isn’t always easy to predict.

The best way to reheat the wings is to add them back to the air fryer. They will now be coated in the garlic butter so you want to make sure the garlic doesn’t burn. They shouldn’t need more than 4-5 minutes to be piping hot again.

I wouldn’t worry about adding more garlic, butter and parmesan when they are reheated but you can do if you want.

Ingredients

  • 500 g chicken wings (approx 6-7 whole wings)
  • 1 tsp sunflower oil
  • 20 g salted butter
  • 1 tsp garlic minced
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbsp parmesan grated (approx 10g)

To finish

  • 1 tbsp parmesan grated
  • 1 tbsp parsley chopped

Instructions

  1. Remove the wing tips from 500g chicken wings if they haven't already been removed

  2. Separate each double wing into flats and drums by carefully cutting through the joint. Check over each wing for any loose pieces of bone and remove

  3. Preheat your air fryer if required

  4. Add the wings to a bowl along with 1 tsp sunflower oil. Toss until the wings are evenly coated

  5. Place the chicken wings in your air fryer making sure you allow space for the air to circulate. You may need to cook the wings in batches depending on the size of your air fryer

  6. Air fry the wings at 200°C for 12-15 minutes. Depending on their size they will be cooked after 10-11 minutes so cook for longer to get them as crisp as you like

  7. Add 20g unsalted butter and 1 tsp minced garlic to a microwavable bowl. Melt in the microwave for 30 seconds or so

  8. Add ½ tsp sea salt to the butter and garlic and stir to mix

  9. Add the wings to a large bowl and tip over the garlic butter

  10. Add 2 tbsp grated parmesan and toss to coat the wings evenly

  11. Serve the wings with another 1 tbsp grated parmesan and 1 tbsp fresh parsley

Recipe Notes

If you want to cook more chicken wings, cook them in batches and then add them all back to the air fryer to reheat.
